Book Club

I have been stuck in a bit of a book rut recently and as summer is now upon us which is always the time for lying about in the sun (or lack thereof in Ireland!) and reading books I decided to shake things up a bit, stop reading old favourites and branch out to something new. Reading books I have already read and really enjoyed is something I like to do, but has become a bit of a bad habit I'm afraid. I don't like change and new things in most areas of my life and as a result this fear of the new has inevitably found its way into limiting my book choices as well!
But no more!

(Bit of digression here but it leads me to my main point, so bear with me.) I have begun following Giovanna Fletcher recently on Twitter (wife of Tom Fletcher aka McFly, they've just had a baby and are dead cute!) And I have also just realised that as well as being Mario from TOWIE's big sister (love TOWIE!) she is also a published novelist. When I found and went on Giovanna's blog it was mainly to find out more information on her novels Billy and Me and You're the One That I Want (which I have downloaded on my Kindle and I'm very much looking forward to starting). However, I was side tracked by her reviews on books she has read and enjoyed. A lot of the writers were ones I recognised or had already read except for one. Jojo Moyes. The book Giovanna reviewed was called Me Before you.

Giovanna had great things to say about the novel but the reason I chose this particular book as the one to break me out of my rut was because of the main plot. It is about a motorcyclist who was involved in a road accident unexpectedly as a pedestrian and consequently becomes a quadriplegic. Why did this appeal me to me? Yes on the surface it is a tad morbid. But as the other half of a motorcyclist, on occasion a pillion passenger and above all a worrier I was morbidly intrigued by the story line.

This thing is scary!!!

Though it took me a couple of sittings reading this book and chapters to become fully immersed in the story once I did I was hooked. I brought it down with me at 7.30am to read whilst having my morning cuppa and my breakfast and didn't want to put it down to go to work. The heatwave that Ireland and the UK experienced last week meant that I was sitting outside in my garden in nearly unheard of 28 degrees sobbing as I finished the final chapters. (Probably a bit weird for the family who live next door who were outside having a BBQ.) I won't spoil the ending for you. What I will say is that I loved Jojo Moyes relaxed and easy writing style, I loved the comedy that worked well in what in many ways is a very serious topic, I really enjoyed that it was a novel that dealt with some big controversial issues whilst also providing one of those good love stories that I always want to find in books.

I have now purchased another or Moyes books entitled The Girl You Left Behind, the story of two women separated by a century are interwoven in this book and I am excited to see how. As a history lover and graduate I like that part of the book is set in France in WW1. This book will hopefully combine my love of chick-lit and historical fiction. I'll let you know how I get on with it.

Ps. I definitely will be starting Giovanna Fletcher's book soon I have just been distracted by Jojo Moyes' books at present.
